Fun House
Journaling: What is making you smile these days? Create a top 10 list of anything you want to talk about.
Creative: Write from the perspective of a house or other location.

There is one house I can think of that must have seen a lot over the years, would have stories to tell if it could, and that is Colony House in the TV show From.

Characters: Colony House, Jasmine, Smiley, Old Lady Creature, Donna, Victor, Ellis, Fatima, Jade, Boyd, Nicki, Acosta, Kevin, Clara

Summary: Colony House was originally a family home.

I was originally built as a family home.

Back then, my name was Three Oaks. Eliza, the grandmother, was head of the family at the time; they call her the Old Lady Creature now. She lived here with her son and his wife, and their children Jasmine, renowned for her beauty, and her brother James, for his smile (people refer to him now as the Smiley Creature). And for a time, the family lived here together happily, until the day the people of the town were approached by the man in the yellow suit, offering them the deal for immortality if they were willing to sacrifice their children. Had I been able to communicate with them, I would have advised against this move, knowing that no good would have ever come of it. (Since Jasmine had reached the age of majority mere weeks before the deal was made and James a few weeks earlier, none from here were sacrificed and the family may not have listened to me anyway.) But, save for one couple who attempted to protest, the townsfolk agreed to make the deal.

None of them knew the consequences that would come as a result of this. The people were no longer able to walk during the day; they were forced to live in the tunnels, only to come out at night, and I stood without an owner for many years.

And then people did come, people trapped by the curse now placed upon the town as part of this deal with the man in yellow, who had found themselves trapped here on their way somewhere else. People would use me as a base while they tried to figure out a way of getting out of this town, or as they came to accept their fate. And then my original family would return at night, leaving none behind. Some would be gone so fast that I was unable to learn their names; Victor Kavanaugh from Maine has been here for so long that I was able to watch him grow up, just as I had done with Jasmine and James.

Other houses like me originally existed in this town, or at least they did until a group of drunken American Civil War soldiers, trapped in the town while attempting to get home, came up with the idea to set the town alight (their reasoning being that if there was no longer any town left standing, there was nowhere for them to be trapped and they would be able to make their escape). Unfortunately for them, it did not quite work out that way, and those who survived the fires remained trapped in this place, still subject to the curse.

One of those American Civil War soldiers is living in the town once again now, actually, although now they call him Jade.

I, set slightly outside the town that had been destroyed, sustained no damage, as some of the more sober members of the American Civil War contingent stepped in to contain the fire before it reached as far as me, however the other houses were completely razed to the ground. Newer homes stand on the site of that old settlement now, along with a diner, a medical facility, a sheriff’s station. Current residents refer to it as the Town.

Eventually, the town’s current sheriff, Boyd Stevens, discovered the talismans that kept houses safe from the creatures, and I was able to become a safe and happy home again. Donna Raines moved in and changed my name to Colony House; I became a community for those who were trapped in the town. Ellis, Fatima, Bakta, Clara, many others passed through my front door; there was a party for anyone who made it a year. It had been one such party when one of my residents, Kevin, invited Jasmine into the house; as she and the other creatures attacked the current residents, I found myself wondering whether there was still any trace of the old Jasmine, the one who had lived her happy childhood here, still inside, whether Jasmine still remembered any of those days, or whether she was all creature now.

The residents were laid to rest, the bus arrived in town, more people took their place. I would like to say that I have remained a safe and happy home ever since; unfortunately, following the shooting of Nicki by Officer Acosta, I cannot yet say this.

It is looking now like some of the townspeople, specifically Tabitha and Jade, are making headway on the breaking of the curse; it is possible the people will soon be free. Should this happen, I do not know what my fate will be. It may be that the town, myself along with it, will cease to exist. However, it may be that the town will open up to the wider world once more, and that I can eventually be a family home again as I was built for.
