[sticky entry] Sticky: Fannish Housekeeping

Jul. 3rd, 2019 11:11 pm
tellshannon815: (oliver queen)
So, for the Fannish Housekeeping prompt over at the sunshine challenge, I'm currently in the middle of updating my Dreamwidth, changed the layout to the ginger cat one and currently going through and uploading lots more icons to better reflect my fandoms (yes, Lost will always be my favourite, but I have lots of others now that weren't reflected). That's going to be a work in progress for a while I think, but gonna keep at it.

And it made me realise my old LJ introduction post was a little out of date too so rejigging here:

My name is Helen and I am 42. I live in England although the town where I live is close enough to the Welsh border that people very often think it's actually in Wales. (If you know your My Fair Lady, I'll give you a hint: hurricanes hardly happen here.) No one ever heard of it until our local celebrity (Ellie Goulding, and more recently It's A Sin's Olly Alexander. I actually know one of Ellie Goulding's relatives, but haven't admitted to her that I'm really more a fan of Olly's). However, my family are originally from the north of England (although I'm also quarter-Scottish) so I really feel that I'm from there despite growing up here. Anyone who's ever seen that BBC drama The Village - it's filmed in the village where a lot of my maternal relatives grew up. I've managed to avoid picking up the "Sam from Lord of the Rings" accent that is common here and retain my own "Merry" accent.

I'm closer to Mum's side of the family than Dad's - my parents split up when I was 10 and while my dad was around, my grandad on Mum's side was really the father figure in my life. If you know your Pretty Little Liars, if I say "Hanna", that tells you all you need to know about my relationship with my father and his side of the family. Grandad died in March 2013 and I still miss him every day. Mum is the oldest of three siblings, the middle sibling being Donald who has two children (Stuart and Sarah - I'm close to both my cousins) and Iain (sometimes called Dudley Dursley to his face due to excessive demands for Christmas and birthday presents) whose guinea pigs were the equivalent (he had 2, the obvious happened, he ended up with about 52, it's a family joke. The last one died about 7 years ago and his wife won't let him have any more!). I hardly know a lot of my relatives on Dad's side as they emigrated to Australia about a month before I was born and I haven't met them too many times. We don't have much of a relationship beyond the occasional comment on Facebook which has me questioning if they even read what I said in the first place. If someone asked me ever about my cousins, I'd immediately talk about Stuart and Sarah, but probably not those in Australia. (And I realise that this intro post is really old because it didn't mention the nephews and nieces, Isabella, Fraser, Isla and Angus, or Freddie the bulldog).

I studied English literature at St Andrews from 2000 to 2004. I've been asked this question so many times that I ended up giving people a spiel just to prevent it - no, I didn't know Prince William, who was in the year below me. I did, however, manage to walk past him in the street without realising until my ex's friend shrieked it in my ear. 20 years on, I've still never lived that one down. I get asked a lot less about Kate, and the answer is that I didn't knowingly meet her although if I'd come across her long enough ago that she wasn't well known yet then I wouldn't remember necessarily. I'm sure I've heard it said that you spend the second half of your first year at university avoiding everyone you met in the first half - anyone who knows where it comes from, remind me as I can't remember? I spent my third year avoiding everyone I met in second year (well, with two exceptions) - I always did do things behind the times. But the friends I made in other years are friends for life.

In fact, once you're friends with me, that's usually the case. I am always loyal as a friend and will always try and make sure I keep in touch as much as I can. If anything, there have been times when I really should have walked away but tried to hard to resurrect a friendship that wasn't going anywhere - some of you know that I recently spent three years going back and forwards on this issue with one person before finally realising it wasn't going anywhere and wasn't doing me any good to hang on to it. This has been more difficult an issue for me in the last few years - in October 2012 a friend of mine died very suddenly in an accident and the fact that we hadn't spoken in a while before he died haunted me a lot at the time, and recently I realised it still does to some extent. A few days afterwards I'd seen some article in a newspaper where some guy had been angsting about what his last words with his father would be and he'd come to the conclusion that too much emphasis is placed on last words by society and it's all the other memories that really matter. At the time, I thought it might be my friend's way of letting me know he'd forgiven me. Some of you won't believe that, and that's okay. Sometimes I'm not too sure myself, but it was the only thing that helped me forgive myself at the time and I'd rather have the possibility that it was than the certainty that it wasn't. But anyway, after that I vowed never to lose touch with anyone again. Lately, I've wondered if I was too hard on myself back then. But I still don't cut anyone out of my life unless something serious has happened or it's been a whole accumulation of things that build up to the point where I can't take any more. So if I remove any of you without you removing me first, it isn't deliberate. (I did have this problem a few years ago which LJ insisted I was doing myself, but it hasn't happened for ages now, fingers crossed.)

I have deleted the paragraph about my work totally because at the time of writing the original I had recently been restructured into a different team and had talked about how the move was so much better for me. How little did I know. Although to be fair, that was written in 2014. The woman who was my manager at that time has recently resigned following an investigation after she was reported for bullying, which was justified - I called her Professor Umbridge because her management skills reminded me very much of this Harry Potter character. (To continue the analogy, my and Umbridge's previous manager had "Cornelius Fudge burying head in the sand" tendencies, and I have often wondered if Umbridge was trying so hard not to be Fudge that she went too far in the opposite direction and didn't understand that that in itself was a mistake.) Things went downhill with Umbridge after an argument she had with our grand-boss, which I don't know the whole story of apart from a second hand version of Umbridge's rants about it, but that happened in 2015, a year after that intro post, so at the time of writing she wasn't as bad. Turnover at that job got so bad I used to refer to it as the Defence Against the Dark Arts job (Voldemort was the safer Harry Potter character to blame that on!) About to start working with yet another manager, still very early days and hoping not to get another Harry Potter villain. I'm realising now how much shit I normalised even though it really wasn't, and taking the time to adjust. As for my actual work it involves coordinating Personal Education Plans for children in care, dealing with reports for children with additional needs, some finance work, arranging and minuting meetings, processing nursery funding applications.

Fandoms I am or have been active in are Lost, Fringe, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Revenge, Doctor Who, Orphan Black, Harry Potter, Being Human UK, Once Upon A Time, The Hunger Games, iZombie, Arrow, Game of Thrones, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Shadowhunters, Teen Wolf, Scream, How To Get Away With Murder, The Originals, Heroes Reborn, Supernatural, Riverdale, Slasher, American Horror Story, Dead of Summer, Gotham, Shadowhunters, Legacies, Supergirl, Smallville, Merlin, Harper's Island, It's A Sin, Cruel Summer, Elite, Superman and Lois, Batwoman, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Manifest, One Of Us Is Lying, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The A List, The Wilds, Yellowjackets, Dark, School Spirits, 1899, FROM, All American, Red Rose and I have a long list to check out. Those where I haven't been very active beyond making the odd icon are Torchwood, Castle, Lord of the Rings, Lucifer, Buffy and Angel, but I am always up for being more active. Those who know me well will know that I will try writing just about any character once and very often find it more interesting to write about those who are overlooked. Sometimes I've wondered why I choose to do this and questioned whether anyone really cares about such characters, but sometimes I've been surprised by the responses I've had to fics about, for example, Byron Montgomery or Sneezy the dwarf (both real examples).

My favourite authors are Riley Sager, John Marrs, Ruth Ware, Catherine Ryan Howard, JD Robb.

I am morally opposed to Brexit. Having said that, politics aren't a deal breaker for me (if you put my whole family in a room, it would cover the entire spectrum, so if I cut off anyone I disagreed with, I wouldn't have much family interaction). I'm willing to agree to disagree, and there's always something else to talk about anyway.

I love cats, especially gingers.

I am open to any friend requests - just add me and I'll add you back.

Comments on fic are always welcome, even if it's a really old fic (but if it's just to say something like "I hate Character X and I'm glad they're dead" heads up that I don't engage with those). I also give permission to create any work inspired by/based on mine, just as long as you let me know. Icons are all shareable. Requests for fic/icons will be considered although I'm more likely to do something with it if we've interacted prior to this (as long as you're not the Arrowverse troll from 2019 who left rude comments to anyone who didn't do theirs, in which case you can jog on because I wouldn't do one for you on principle.)

My other contact details are as below. People are welcome to add me anywhere as long as you let me know who you are (let's just say there was a snooping situation at Exjob which left me a bit paranoid about who's reading what I post and even though I already did the friends only thing before I even started Exjob and met aforementioned snoop, it just made me more determined to do so).

Combination of not having done much ramble in a couple of weeks and also the fact that Yellowjackets has now returned and I'm conscious of the fact that [community profile] yellowjackets_fans needs a spoiler policy in the info made me think of the subject for ramble, and it's spoilers.

After what period of time do people think spoilers are fair game? Something I came across once in a Supernatural group on Facebook was where someone had posted something about Season 8, and someone had got annoyed with them about that because they hadn't got that far yet so for them, that was a spoiler. While I can't remember exactly when this was, it was years after Season 8 had aired, so a lot of people were saying things about how it was ridiculous to expect no spoilers to be posted for something that had aired years ago, and if they were daft enough to read a group knowing they were years behind, that was on them. And okay, that one was fair enough, but what would be an acceptable period to make sure all spoilers are behind a cut? Some go for a week, does that sound reasonable?

Something that may make a difference is whether something is airing weekly, or whether it drops all at once (so those who choose to binge it all on Day 1 get ahead of those who only have time/prefer to watch one at a time). I particularly remember it coming up with You, although it'll have happened with others for sure, where conversations were going along the lines of:

Poster 1: "I can't believe X is dead!"
Poster 2: "I can't believe you just spoiled it, I'm not there yet!"
Poster 1: "It's your own fault for reading the group when you're not caught up, just mute it, fool!"

Thing is, it's not quite as simple as just muting it, fool. I've definitely had it where one of my shows has aired in the US when it's the middle of the night in my UK time zone, and I've got up in the morning to find my phone has decided to give me a Google News alert about "Legends of Tomorrow Just Killed Off *character who was actually improved by being a ghost*". Seriously, phone, can't you just stick to the usual guff you send me about big snowstorms that never actually come, train delays in Sydney and some MPs who've never spoken in Parliament...in Kenya? (all examples of real rubbish my phone thinks I want alerts about).

Something I do think is dickish is posting spoilers for something that hasn't actually aired yet. When season 3 of From was airing, there was a fuss over some eejits having posted spoilers on Reddit for the last few episodes of the season, before they'd aired. I made the conscious choice to avoid them at the time, so I don't know for certain now how much of it was actually legit (I caught a quick glimpse of one thing, but thought at the time that what I did see looked like gibberish that could have been created if someone asked ChatGPT how the season was going to end. One thing it claimed was going to happen with one particular character didn't end up coming to pass, so I think that one was just rubbish.)

Given the choice, I'd rather it was a choice I made for myself whether I get spoiled or not. The majority of the time, it's going to be a no, and I'd rather wait to see the episodes for myself. (Stems from when I was four, and I was so excited about my advent calendar that I opened half my windows in November. Then when it got to the actual dates in December and I'd already seen the pictures, the disappointment was such that it put me off any ideas of ever hunting for Christmas and birthday presents, and this has carried on through to me choosing not to seek out spoilers for my shows as well. I can even remember one time reading someone's theory for Lost about how Locke's storyline with his father was going to end, and they were close enough to what actually happened that it almost felt like a disappointment because I knew - even though that was no one's fault. Someone guessed what was going to happen before the episode aired, they guessed right, it was one of those things. The time when someone put "We will remember you, X" actually on a cut for some icons right after the episode aired and that was how I found out X had been killed off? That was just dickish.

I think the one time I've really made an exception to that was the time loads of my shows came back from hiatus at the same time and that happened to be when I was going to Vienna for a week with family, I knew I wouldn't be able to watch anything that week due to lack of time (and as it turned out, shit wifi as well) so on that occasion I was okay with it.

Challenge #12 Create a Rec Countdown.

My 5 favourite shows of all time:

1. Lost
2. Dark
3. From
4. Yellowjackets
5. I'm going to cheat because I'm torn between The Wilds, Fringe and School Spirits.

4 favourite authors:

1. Riley Sager
2. John Marrs
3. Ruth Ware
4. JD Robb

3 ships:

1. Sayid/Desmond (Lost)
2. George/Mitchell (Being Human UK)
3. Rumple/Rowena (Once Upon a Time and Supernatural)

2 celebs I'd like to meet:

1. Nathaniel Hall (Donald from It's a Sin) - the character was a prat, but the actor comes across as a good guy, makes the effort to interact with his fans, he's a good advocate for HIV awareness. Plus he's from a similar part of the country to where my family originally came from, so we'd have that common ground.
2. Douglas E. Hughes - From's latest villain who's only appeared at the end of season 3, who in real life comes across as a very funny guy on his socials (one fan made a crochet figure of his character and he does these funny poses with it).

1 self rec fic:

https://archiveofourown.org/works/963730 - Chaff and Haymitch's last night of drinking before the Quarter Quell and the story of Chaff's Games.

Challenge #14

In your own space, create your own fandom challenge.

I challenge you to try something new. Maybe that's a fandom you haven't written in/made art for before, maybe if you usually write try making some graphics, or vice versa, maybe try a new character you haven't tried before (even if it's a character you don't actually like that much - they have their own stories to tell as well!) Maybe check out that new show, or author, you've been thinking about for a while but not got round to it yet. As long as it's new to you, anything goes.
tellshannon815: (reggie)
Challenge #13

Interact with someone in fandom you haven't talked with before.

I think that through commenting on people's entries in Snowflake, there's bound to have been people I haven't interacted with before, and I know I've definitely done it on the three sentence ficathon (getting into a conversation about how there really isn't enough From fic out there, for example), I can call this one done.
tellshannon815: (bartosz)
Any, any, a suitcase of memories (From, Victor)

As Victor takes one last look at his suitcase before preparing to bury it one last time, he thinks back to the first time he buried it, when it contained mementoes of the people who had been there at the same time as his mother, as Eloise, as Christopher.

The curse trapping them all in town was broken now, and most people have taken the opportunity to return to their lives; for Victor, having been stuck there since 1978, there was nothing out there for him; he couldn’t see how he could adjust to the outside world as the others had described it, so he had made the decision to remain,

Now his suitcase contains mementoes of a new group of people; the drone that Randall had been going to give to his nephew for his birthday, Ethan’s Cromenockle book, Jade’s T shirt with cats on, Sara and Nathan’s old ceramic ornament, Tabitha’s bracelet.

The Vampire Diaries universe, any, the Merge (Caroline, Josie, Lizzie)

It’s Lizzie and Josie’s 22nd birthday; Caroline smiles to herself as she sits with Lizzie listening to her talking to Josie on Facetime about their plans, Lizzie having dinner with MG, Josie having just come back from a date with Penelope Park, who she’d reconnected with after arriving in Belgium (to Lizzie’s disapproval at first, although Lizzie and Penelope are making more effort with each other now).

Josie and Penelope are supposed to be arriving the next day for a birthday party Hope’s organising for both twins; Jed and Ben are coming back for it, Elena and Damon, Bonnie, Kaleb, MG, Wade, Finch and Cleo will be there.

As Lizzie starts talking about the people who can’t be there to celebrate with them, Rafael, Landon and Ethan, Caroline thinks all over again about how lucky they are that this event can actually take place with both twins without being marred by the Merge; being a vampire wasn’t necessarily what she would have hoped for Lizzie, but it meant that she still got to keep both girls, that they’d have many more birthdays past their 22nd, and the Merge would never have to take place.

any, any, you say the whole world's ending it already did (Dark, Magnus)

As recently as a week earlier, Magnus would have laughed off any stories about the supposed apocalypse that was meant to be happening in Winden. Yet faced with this man, apparently an older version of his childhood friend Jonas, saying he’s there to save them from it, and knowing that time travel exists, at this point he can believe anything.

As Magnus thinks back over the last year and how the world as he had always known it had been turned upside down, his father and younger brother missing (trapped in the past, he now knows, where he can never see them again) and his mother largely absent, he wonders why he should fear this apocalypse when the world as he had known it had ended months ago for him.

Any fandom, any canon character/any of your OCs, firsts and lasts (Dark, Bartosz/Silja)

The first time Bartosz meets Silja, he doesn’t know who she is; at this point he thinks she really is from 1890, completely separate from the insanity that is the time travel, Sic Mundus, his former best friend Jonas who’s just full of shit, and that she could represent a fresh start for him.

He thinks the last time he sees her is the day she dies giving birth to Agnes; the real last time he sees her is the first time she sees him, when she arrives as a six year old child, recognisable by the scar on her face, accompanied by Hannah, her mother.

Realising that Silja was part of the time travel loop after all, Hannah’s daughter, Jonas’s sister, Bartosz finds himself questioning their whole relationship; did Silja know who he was all along even as he had avoided all talk of the 2000s, had their whole relationship been a plan by Adam that she was complicit in, had she ever loved him at all?

any, any, I know I could have loved you / But you would not let me (Dark, Hannah/Michael)

“I could have loved you,” Hannah thinks as she sits by Michael’s grave, “but you never let me get to know you properly”. Months later, when the older version of their son explained Michael’s time travel history to her, Hannah understood why her husband had never been able to open up, knew she wouldn’t have believed him even if he had tried, but wondered if there could have been any way of them forming a closer connection.

“I could have loved you,” Michael had thought, “but I saw the way you always looked at Ulrich – my father – when you thought no one was looking, and I saw other people noticing, and I knew I would never be anything but second best to you.”

yellowjackets, any f/f, no death will tear us apart (Taissa/Van)

She’d only just reunited with Van; how was Taissa supposed to react to the fact that any reunion could only ever be brief due to Van’s cancer diagnosis, to the fact that Van had told her that they couldn’t even try?

Taissa had gone into politics to get things done, to make a change, now she was finding herself with something she couldn’t do anything about; but she wasn’t going to give up, she was determined that she’d be there for Van every step of the way.

Then Van came to her, said the doctors couldn’t understand it but she seemed to be in remission, and Taissa thought of Lottie’s comments about how the wilderness had wanted something; she still wasn’t sure how far she could believe that, but she had her miracle, nothing needed to tear her and Van apart after all.

Any, any, the antagonist time travels back to the start (Lost, Esau the smokey git)

Jacob won’t recognise him if he does happen to see him, neither will that woman who dared to call herself his mother; he’s wearing the face of John Locke, still yet to be born, not the face they would be familiar with.

If he’s correct, he’s landed in the days immediately before his village was burned by his so-called mother, in the days when he was making his plans to leave the island; it’s now or never for him to do what he has to do.

If he kills her now, before she has chance to thwart his plans to leave the island, then she and Jacob won’t be able to succeed in trapping him here, the last two thousand years of his life will never have happened, he’ll get to go home.

Any fandom, any characters, reverse amnesia: everyone else forgets you. (Lost, Kate)

With no one remembering who she is, Kate’s no longer a wanted woman; in the eyes of the world, Wayne Janssen’s death was caused by a genuine accidental gas explosion, and they’re not looking for anyone else in connection with it.

Diane doesn’t know who she is when Kate sees her in the hospital, she seems confused but at least she isn’t yelling for help; Kate’ll take that, it’s not as if she and Diane have had a close mother-daughter relationship for years anyway.

What’s harder is when she bumps into Jack, or Hurley or Sayid, who had been the most important people in her life for those few months, and now they don’t even know who she is.

any, any, deleted comment (Yellowjackets, Taissa)

Taissa always tried to ignore it when she got deleted comments on her official campaign social media pages; probably they were trolls, or Bathurst supporters, just leaving insults or nonsense which her campaign team were deleting before she saw them. And after the incidents where Bathurst had dropped hints about cannibalism during the time Taissa had spent out there in the wilderness post-plane crash, she was glad of it; those kinds of comments weren’t anything she wanted to see.

She tries not to wonder if any of the comments could have been left by Van, wanting to reach out to her, wish her luck and then thinking better of it and deleting her comments; Van’s part of her past now, Taissa’s married to Simone now, she knows she shouldn’t be thinking about her even as part of her wishes that at least one of those comments had come from Van.

any, any a parrot, a donkey, a dog, a bone / some of us never had a home / and if we did we left it long ago / and didn't know we were loved (Bodies, Elias)

Elias Mannix had never really felt he had a home; abandoned by his biological parents, raised by an adoptive family who knew it was only temporary, they may have claimed they wanted Elias to fulfil his destiny, but this had never made him feel loved; his mantra in 2053 may have been “know you are loved”, but he knew nothing of the kind.

In the 1890s, he was accepted into society, with the Harker name and the backing of the real Julian Harker’s mother, yet he always knew deep down that there was nothing real here; he knew he was not loved by Lady Agatha Harker.

In the moment now where Sarah Mannix finally accepted Elias as her son, as she embraced him his final thought before being erased from existence was that he was loved after all, maybe even had been long ago although he had never known it.

any, any, begging for death (Dark, Ulrich)

It had been the visit from Hannah in late 1987 that had done it, taunting him about the fact that she was carrying Egon Tiedemann’s child as though that was going to mean anything to him; it had been over thirty years now, Hannah had been nothing to Ulrich for a long time.

It had been Katharina he had hoped would walk through the door, ever since that day when she had come back to him, promised she would come back and help him get out of there, get Mikkel, get them both back home; something had to have happened to her, Katharina was not like Hannah, it would not have been like her to leave him trapped on this ward that had been his home since he’d first got stuck in 1953.

The future with Katharina was gone, he was never going to get the chance to see Mikkel again, or Magnus, or Martha, and Hannah’s visit had only served to remind him of all that was lost to him; Ulrich had come to the conclusion that death could only bring him relief from the pain.

Riverdale | Alice Cooper/FP Jones | prom night

As Alice walked into the prom, she briefly caught FP’s eye before he turned away and made a big point of talking to Fred and Mary. Fred and FP’s band were supporting the main band at the prom; even if Alice had been FP’s date, she wouldn’t have got to spend as much time with him as she would have liked, but at least Mary was good company, the two of them could have hung out while they waited for their dates.

Instead, Alice is going with Hal, she knows she’ll have his undivided attention tonight, yet as she pretends to laugh at his stupid joke, she looks over his shoulder at FP again and thinks that even with the limited amount of time he’d have been able to spend with her, she’d still have had a better time with him as her date.

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.

Years ago, I remember seeing some random meme about tropes doing the rounds on my friends list, and I can't remember the questions, but I do remember I gave up and deleted whatever I was trying to type because I just had nothing to say about forced to share a bed, coffee shop AU or any of the other tropes on the meme.

Since then I've realised what my thing actually is. I love alternate timelines, what if So and so didn't die, that kind of thing. The first idea I ever had for a fic (which I scrapped because it wasn't great) involved Lost's Michael and Walt having been prevented from boarding the plane (for context, Michael was the character I didn't like at the time - this was before I realised that Smokey McSmokeFace aka What's his face Bastard was truly the worst of the worst).

Sometimes I might play it where a character's made an active choice to try and change things - see Reverse Flashpoint where The Flash's Nora, determined to prevent Barry's disappearance, is manipulated by Eobard into giving Barry the metahuman cure (which I was so convinced was the route the show would go down, I was disappointed when the finale ended up being Cicada crap) or The Eleven Mile Game (the end of the original book The Midnight Game totally set this up, I'm still hoping for a sequel because I think there is potential). The first ever series I finished and posted was Once Upon a Time's Zelena trying to erase Regina from existence, with a little help from Jafar who was brought to Gold's shop in the curse - Defying Gravity.

Sometimes I just change it without making it be an active choice by the character. After getting really frustrated when first watching Dark when Ulrich got stuck in 1953 instead of making it to 1986 to rescue Mikkel, I started my current project Caught Somewhere In Time, where Ulrich does get to 1986 - I didn't get into how he managed to do that, just started with Egon returning Mikkel to Ulrich's care. With this one, I have wondered many times if I bit off more than I could chew. At the time of starting, I was still on season 1, so didn't fully understand the ramifications of removing Mikkel from the 1986 timeline (for anyone not familiar with Dark, the timelines and family trees are very complicated. This show comes with family trees, one for each season, so people can keep track of how everyone is related). Instead of giving Mikkel his happy ending, returning him to 2019 would just erase the whole Nielsen family line, and I now feel I'm being drawn to an ending I'd initially wanted to avoid.

And I still want to finish You Are Here, Like A Mystery where Lost's Sun goes back to 1977 instead of staying in 2007 - I lost heart a bit after certain events of season 6 (yes, Smokey McSmokeFace, I'm looking at you) but determined to come up with an ending that also erases that episode.

Speaking of Smokey McSmokeFace, I realised I was a lost cause a couple of days ago when I was at the three sentence ficathon and saw the prompt where the antagonist travels back in time to the start. I now have Origin where said asshole travels back in time to when his fake mother was still alive, and gets the chance to change time so he can leave the island back then. I hate this guy. I haven't forgiven him for killing off my het pairing and one half of my slash pairing. And yet I'm actually seriously considering expanding on this and letting him actually change time. Somebody save me....(*Smallville theme stuck in my head*)

In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts. This could be your first fandom, your first fandom friend, the first fanwork you created, the first fanwork you interacted with... The options are endless!

My first ever fic was written for Lost, the first fandom to ever get me thinking that I could play an active role in it, the first to get me wanting to fill in the missing pieces, the first to give me an OTP (for those who don't know me, that is Sayid/Desmond), the first character to be Dead To Me (says she who has just written that same person - make that smoke thing - for the 3 sentence fiacthon). If you do know me, you won't be surprised to hear that the first fic I attempted was about the less often written characters (it was one about the family members of the crash survivors and their first Christmas following the crash).

Challenge #8

In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for a beloved character, relationship or fandom.

One I'm really into at the moment is From, about a town that traps anyone who happens to arrive there (this usually happens after seeing a fallen tree in the road). It's a horror (the characters are also faced with creatures that are kind of like vampires who come out at night, their origin story is mentioned in season 3 although there's going to be more to it I'm sure), a good cast - I first became aware of the show via its leading man Harold Perrineau (Michael from Lost) and went on to recognise August from Once Upon a Time and then Professor Shane from Vampire Diaries (even if I did spend the first episode looking at that guy and thinking "I know you, why do I know you?"). There's family dynamics to explore (Boyd and Ellis's initial estrangement and the story behind that), the hope of possibly finding a way out versus those who are reconciled to their fate. And for anyone worried about the idea of another Lost (this comparison has been made, and yes there are similarities) we are starting to get answers now!

The Babysitters Club, AU, what if Jessi got the role of Peter Pan?

Jessi was Peter Pan, of course; let’s face it, she was the person at SMS with the most experience, the obvious choice, and everyone else’s lack of experience was really showing.

They weren’t even interested when she tried to tell them how they could do better, even Stacey and Dawn; Mr Cheney had reminded her a couple of times that he, not Jessi, was directing, and at one point Kristy had even defended Cokie Mason, saying that while she didn’t like her either, Jessi had been too harsh in her criticism of her!

It was seeing Jackie Rodowsky burst into tears when she’d yelled at him for forgetting his lines that had brought her back to her senses; she may have been playing Peter Pan, but that was the moment when Jessi Ramsey grew up.

any, any, "Those who hunt monsters should take care, lest they thereby become monsters themselves; for if you gaze long enough into the abyss, the abyss also stares into you." (From, Boyd)

Boyd understood now that maybe it would have been a better plan if he’d had a conversation with Randall about whether he’d ever noticed the creatures had any routines before trying to watch them from the bus and plan to tackle them himself; he regretted in the moment that he’d been prepared to sacrifice Randall to them in the moment even if he did think it was the only way he could get Tabitha, Jim and Henry to safety; he looked at the scars on Randall’s face and knew he bore responsibility, yet still he knew he had to continue.

He looked at Elgin, missing an eye, heard Sara’s explanation that she’d had to do it to find out where he’d hidden Fatima, that she felt it had to be her rather than him because she couldn’t let the town take his soul the way it had taken hers, and even then Boyd felt he had to continue.

After witnessing the rebirth of that smiley creature he’d already killed once, determined to find some way of taking him out again, he began to lose his way; Ellis confronted him once more, told him he’d become obsessed with those things, that he and Fatima needed him right now, the whole town needed him, it was starting to feel like the leadup to Abby’s death all over again, the old Boyd would never have sanctioned what happened to Elgin or Randall, and Boyd wondered if the town had already taken his soul after all.

Any, any, I will fall in love with you / Over and over again (From, Jade/Tabitha)

Jade remembered his previous life as Christopher, how he’d spent time with Miranda and her kids, trying to make them all laugh, how he’d found himself developing feelings for Miranda, but Miranda still talked of her hopes that once they had saved the children, she could return home to Henry.

He remembered a life where he’d become trapped in the town attempting to return to his wife from the American Civil War, only to fall for someone else, someone he now knew to be a former incarnation of Tabitha; he remembered the very first of their lives together, where they tried to save their daughter from the other townspeople’s determination to sacrifice the children.

Now that Jade knew who Tabitha was, he admitted to himself that he’d been falling for her all over again while they’d been trapped here, but he’d come to this realisation as Teacup had only just died; how could he raise it with her now?

any, any, that tarot card is not a warning (Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty, Ethan)

Ethan’s tried to tell himself that it was a coincidence that Luca the psychic should have pulled the death card for him right after that strange lady on the plane predicted his death at age thirty, he’s Googled the meaning of the card and found that it means change, endings and beginnings, rather than actual death.

He can just hear what Harvey would have said if he’d been able to tell that story to him; “Guys like us don’t even go for tarot readings; that tarot card is not a warning”.

Except that would have been easier to believe had Luca not quoted one of Harvey’s sayings even though he didn’t know the guy, had the lady not given him that prediction and been proved right about those other passengers (even taking into account what Leo said in brushing off the deaths of the centenarian doctors from old age because that was a reasonable prediction anyway, Kayla Halfpenny’s accident was not so easy to explain).

any / any / tomorrow is now (Dark, Jonas, Bartosz, Martha)

They’d sat and talked about possible futures for themselves, Jonas, Bartosz and Martha; Bartosz had believed that he’d take over running the power plant like his father and his grandmother before him, Martha wanted to make it big in acting and get out of Winden, Jonas changed his mind practically every week.

Sometimes they’d speculate on the kind of technology that might exist in thirty years’ time, whether that would be flying cars, or the ability to live in space, but the one thing the three of them always agreed on was that they would still be friends in the future.

As Jonas finds himself in 2052, realises that their tomorrow has become his now, takes in the destroyed city that had been Winden, his friendship with Bartosz and Martha in tatters even if he could get back to 2019, he wishes for the tomorrow that they had talked of back then.

any, any, i found your journal (Yellowjackets, Shauna, Callie)

Shauna was finally beginning to feel that things were heading back to normal as she and Jeff headed back from Natalie’s funeral; she and Jeff were back on track, Saracusa had been…handled by Misty’s new man Walter so she was no longer worried about facing charges over Adam Martin.

As for Callie, there was still some way to go, and she still wasn’t sure she was ready to share too much about her time out there after the crash, but she knew the day was approaching when she was going to have to open up a bit more.

Except when she arrived home to find Callie brandishing a battered looking old notebook, saying “Hey, Mom, I found your journal”, Shauna knew that time had come sooner than expected.

The Baby-sitters Club, Dawn /& Kristy, hard to say I'm sorry

When Kristy gets a moment alone with Dawn before Dawn leaves for California, she apologises for having told Claudia that Dawn was leaving, for having created the situation where Mary Anne found out from Logan before Dawn had chance to tell her herself.

But there’s so much else that Kristy knows she should apologise for, for all the time she spent resenting Dawn when Dawn first arrived in Stoneybrook and she and Mary Anne became best friends and later stepsisters, even the stupid stuff like goading her in their shared cabin on the Bahamas trip.

There’s so much that she wants to say, but doesn’t know how to say it, but when Dawn looks at her, Kristy thinks she understands.

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a wishlist of sorts.

My One True Crossover pairing is Rumple from Once Upon a Time and Rowena from Supernatural, so any kind of fic or art for them would be great.

I still love the idea of an iZombie fic where Liv is on romance writer brain right after solving the Zombie High murder case, starts writing Zombie High slash fiction and Ravi has to read it.

Anything post-S2 of The Wilds, which was cancelled way before its time.

CAT icons.

Anything Sayid/Desmond from Lost.

Anything at all from Dark, From or Yellowjackets.

Challenge #6

Share your favourite piece of original canon.

The year was 2002, I was in my second year at university, had just come out of a bad relationship, but as we were part of the same friendship group he was in my face all the time, a lot of them proved themselves to be really more his friends...I'll leave that bit there because it's getting off topic and this is a public post. That was just added as context for where my head was when someone had put on the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I had some very vague familiarity with Buffy at that point, but this is the episode that really drew me into it. From relating to Buffy's Going Through the Motions, to feeling cheered up by the Bunnies song and I'll Never Tell. This episode was what encouraged me to watch the rest of the series, and it's remained a favourite ever since. It's inspired some of my later Vampire Diaries fics (Rest in Peace totally fits Klaus/Caroline, for one example, but there were a few) and also inspired some of my icons.

Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

Well, there's meeting all you guys of course!

Seriously though, fandom has given me that outlet to ramble and speculate on about what's coming up next in my shows, to get recommendations for other media, to get to know people who like the same stuff as I do (when everyone around me is talking about who's going to get evicted from Reality TV Show X, which is of no interest to me, I have this outlet where I can talk about stuff I like to people who'll know what I'm talking about.

One post I read touched on researching things for fandom, and that's definitely been one I've done (German Christmas traditions were possibly of more interest to me than 2004's World Series - some of you can probably guess what that one related to! Or possibly both if you know me well enough to know which fandoms I'm absolutely obsessed with right now)

And fandom kept me going during the pandemic when everything else was going to shit and I didn't see my family for over a year (that's the worst of being scattered across Craphole Island aka the UK).

Challenge #4

Since this is the start of a new year, this challenge will be to set your own goals! Of course we can all make large or ambitious goals, remember that small and/or short goals are also good!

Well, where do I start?

I'll start by trying to get some of my series finished. One of them is heading close to a conclusion now, and I know where I'm going with it, even though I had the exact opposite intention in mind when I started that fic as what I thought would be a one-shot. (Let's just say I tried to alter the timeline of Dark, at a time when I was still on Season 1 and didn't have the full context of the complexities of the timeline. For those who don't know, it's...a lot. The show comes with family trees to keep track of how they're all related, and since lots of people are related through time travel, it gets complicated. If Mikkel really had been restored to his own timeline, what would actually happen would have been that the whole Nielsen family line would have been erased from existence, but that wasn't a route I wanted to go down.) At the moment, it's looking possible that it'll end up being 13 chapters, and while I'm probably the least superstitious out of my family, I can just hear their reactions to that now.

I've also been saying for years that I'll go back to the Lost series where Sun went back to 1977 with the others (I got about 3 chapters in back in 2010 and then lost heart after Sun and Jin were killed off. I'm not sure where I'll take it now without killing them off, because this time I can more easily make that choice. But I'll get there.)

Another is to get my book bingo achieved and get my TBR list down. Every so often I say I'll stop buying new books for Lent, or between my birthday and Christmas (my birthday's in August), and never stick to it. Maybe this year I'll be able to make my TBR list manageable.

Another is to get my to-watch list down a bit as well (although the new season of Yellowjackets is coming soon and will take priority at that point).

To get more done with my 100fandoms table.

And I'll keep the one about knowing when it's sometimes easier to let go of goals or modify them if I come to the conclusion that they may not be achievable.

Challenge #3

In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.

Despite society's insistence otherwise, the beliefs and opinions that we hold about things change over time. We thought it was important that we reflect that (and perhaps laugh at our previously ill-considered opinions) with this challenge.

I've been wracking my brains trying to think of something to answer this with, and then as I was typing out bits of a fanfic about the character in my icon, it came to me.

If you know me well, you will know that I will try writing any character at least once, and try to write as many characters as I can, but at one time, I used to avoid those characters I didn't like. As per my fandom history post, my Lost writing began life around writing Michael out after he shot Ana Lucia and Libby. (As far as that goes, I did mellow on Michael as time went on, he's no longer my hated character - come on down, Mr. Smokey McSmokeFace/What's His Face Bastard/The Dickhead in Black - so I guess that's a fannish opinion that changed over time too). And after a certain episode of Lost season 6 which I don't particularly want to rewatch, I did vow never to write Smokey McSmokeface again.

But over time, I realised that even if the character isn't exactly my favourite, (same applies to pairings), they still have story to tell and I can still do that for them. Let's take Dark, one of my current favourites. Hannah, the character in my icon, does some shitty things, a lot of which arise out of her obsession with Ulrich, but she's still got her story to tell.

Another one I could mention was Fringe. For anyone not familiar with the show, there was a character called Astrid, and a running gag with another character, Walter, repeatedly getting her name wrong, calling her things like Asterix, Asteroid, Asterisk. I found it particularly irritating when he used Astro, as that was my unviersity ex-boyfriend's nickname (he studied astrophysics, and he had the same first name as one of his friends, so that friendship group used to call both those guys nicknames to distinguish the two). But I'd just roll my eyes, grit my teeth, know that he wasn't calling her that at me and she'd probably be Asterisk the next episode. What I wasn't factoring in was how the actress, Jasika Nicole, felt about it until she spoke out about it five years ago. John Noble's apologised for it, although she's never blamed him - he was just doing what he had to with the scripts he was given. But reading about how Jasika Nicole didn't find that set a safe space puts a whole new perspective on the scripts.

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Whether you've been in fandom for a while or just discovered fandom, we'd love to know how you came to fandom! Was it that one book or a TV show or movie or anime/manga or a band/song that gave you that first spark? Or a character or characters that you wanted more of but the canon material just didn't have enough of them? Or were you introduced to fandom by someone?

You can be as brief or detailed as you like: timeline, narrative, bullet points, etc. :D

In the past, whenever I've answered this, I've usually started with the point where I first became aware of online fandom's existence. But having read through some of the other entries to this, I wonder if I should try and go earlier. So if I did, I guess I would start with when I got into Babysitters Club in primary school. Since I'm in the UK, we were a couple of years behind the US, and this became more noticeable once the Mysteries got out of sync with the rest of the series - for example, through the Mysteries I knew that Stacey had briefly quit the club to spend more time with Robert, then rejoined again, before that happened in the ordinary series, and Abby just suddenly seemed to be there with no explanation. Then as time went on I moved on towards Sweet Valley High (although I still have no interest in reading the Confidential - I remember I found out some of what happens and honestly thinking it was a joke at first.)

Those who know me well will know that I have a pet peeve when it comes to the same characters getting too much attention while some barely get any. (Jack and his tattoos, I'm looking at you. My frustration at the amount of Jack episodes on Lost is not about Jack as a character, I'd feel the same way had it been any other character who got an excessive amount of centric episodes, including one about their tattoos, while other characters got nothing at all. Libby, Charlotte, Ilana and Frank should have had their own episodes, and I'd have enjoyed more Ben. I would even have liked more development of the Others. Just don't get me started.) Anyway, that little ramble got a bit off topic, because what I was getting at was the origins of this pet peeve when I was 13. At that time, I'd got into the Making Out series by Katherine Applegate, and there were far too many books centred on the character Zoey. Zoey was a character I ended up wanting to shake by the end of it because I found it irritating how her response to everything was a big dramatic run away. But even without that, there were plenty of other characters who deserved more attention. Christopher never gets his own book at all. Kate doesn't get any POV time in what is technically her first book. The diary entries always began with Zoey regardless of whose book it was. I wasn't aware of the term Mary Sue when I was 13, but if I had been, I would have applied it to her. And the peeve has remained with me ever since, through Jack's tattoos to Once Upon a Time's Regina vs Snow episodes which definitely got into I Think This Flashback's Mostly Filler territory by the end.

Apologies to those who have known me quite a while, because you probably heard this. I first became aware of the existence of online fandom back in 2001, when I was in my second year at university, and some of my ex's friends were writing Harry Potter fic. They were mainly into the porn, (again if you know me well you'll know that I'd rather explore backstory or alternate timelines) and once that particular situation had exploded (without getting into the whole saga, this was an "ex keeps the friends in the breakup" situation) I didn't really want to get too actively involved in that fandom because I didn't want to cross paths with The Piss Artist Formerly Known as Xander (my ex's friend Sal, who had this kind of alter ego Alexander, posted her fics under that name, and when people assumed that was her real name she went along with it and created this whole Xander persona for herself, ended up getting engaged to this Australian woman she met in the fandom and didn't come clean to her for ages...all very odd.) and friends. As time went on, I did participate in it a little bit more even if I'm not super active. However, those who know me will know the sagas of how my ex-managers ended up being nicknamed Fudge and Umbridge (I have a Lupin right now who is unfortunately leaving - please don't let me get a Lockhart next), or my uncle's excessive requests for extra Christmas and birthday presents led to him being known as Dudley Dursley to his face, so you will know that this fandom has continued to have some influence on me.

The first fandom I ever started writing in was Lost - I've since private locked (I don't do deleting, but those should not see the light of day) some of my very early ideas about trying to fix the end of S2 where Michael was prevented from boarding the flight and couldn't shoot Ana Lucia and Libby, but I found myself with lots of material for the underdeveloped characters (seriously, the Others have enough potential for a spinoff). Over time, I started picking up other shows through people's recommendations - Fringe was my next big fandom after Lost finished, then I got into Once Upon a Time, Vampire Diaries, How To Get Away With Murder, Arrowverse, Revenge, Hunger Games - it's a pretty long list. A couple of my favourites now are ones that I knew about via the actors who'd been in my other shows, Yellowjackets through Steven Krueger (Ben) promoting it on his social media, From because Harold Perrineau was starring.

Aside from Lost which has always been my main, my other main fandoms right now are Yellowjackets, The Wilds, Dark and From - anyone familiar with those might have noticed that some of them have very similar themes, or characters, even lines (Yellowjackets' Jeff telling Shauna she's not Rambo is totally Rose and Bernard. Just removed one character comparison for From and Lost to avoid spoiling said new character for anyone who's not up to 3.04.) Fringe and Lost have a lot of crossover potential (my headcanon is that Daniel was in St Claire's with Walter and Miles was a Cortexiphan kid), Once Upon a Time has the same format and some actors. So I guess my first fandom experience has had some impact on my more recent ones.
