lost_in_108 prompt #15, games. As Tom and Jack play football at the Barracks, Tom reflects on what might have been.
As Tom tosses the football to Jack, makes some joke about how the two of them are as bad players as each other, he thinks that it doesn’t matter that they come from opposing camps. It’s like the Christmas truce in 1915, where those British and German soldiers had played football themselves.
It won’t last. Ben’s promised Jack can go home tomorrow, although Tom can‘t see it. And he’s sending Tom to New York, so either way, they’ll go their separate ways.
He knows the hopes he had when Jack arrived are futile, accepts that Jack’s not interested. But while they play football, he can believe they’re friends.
