“Dude, what’s up?”

Walt shook his head. “Forget it. It doesn’t matter.” And it didn’t, not really, he tried to tell himself. It wasn’t as if he even wanted to be with Michael (he still kept thinking of his father as that, even though Brian had always told him he really ought to be calling him Dad, but he just couldn’t get used to it). Why was he even disappointed that his father had just gone to play golf, leaving him with Claire? He always made such a big deal about the time Walt spent with Mr. Locke, but at least Mr. Locke actually wanted to spend time with him. He listened to Walt, treated him like an adult. Michael just treated him like some stupid kid. He hadn’t wanted him to play, not really. If he had, he’d have brought Walt into the game right then instead of just going to take his shot

“Hey, come on.” Hurley smiled at him. “Wanna see Jack kick Charlie’s ass at golf? Charlie was just telling me earlier about how he’s from the home of golf, well, his father is anyway, but he’s still nearly as big a duffer as me.”

Walt smiled for a moment, hesitated.

“That’s more like it,” Hurley grinned. “Come on. When we’ve watched them, you can give me a chance to win back some of that $83,000 I lost to you at backgammon.”

“Don’t count on that,” Walt laughed. “It’s like I was telling you before. Brian always said I was the luckiest guy he’d ever met. You sure you wanna do this? You know, you could end up owing me even more.”

“And I’m good for it, dude. Soon as we get off the island, you’ll get your money.”

“That’s okay,” Walt shrugged, not believing that for one minute, but deciding he could have fun letting Hurley try to win it back anyway. And if his dad was still there, well, he didn’t have to hang out with him. He could have fun with Hurley, and his other friends.

“Who are you calling a duffer?” Charlie asked, grinning, as Hurley and Walt made their way back to the golf course.

“You mean you won?” Hurley asked.

“That’s right.” Boone chipped in. “And you, my friend,” he continued, turning towards Sawyer, “owe us two tubes of sunscreen.”

“Yeah, whatever,” Sawyer growled. “You’ll get it.”

“Speaking of which,” Charlie turned back towards Hurley, “didn’t you bet 10 dollars against me?”

“He already owes me $83,000 from when we were playing backgammon before, and he thinks he’s going to win that back.” Walt explained to Charlie, who laughed and said “if he’s lost that much to you already, he’s got no chance. I’m putting my money on you, mate.”

“Yeah,” came a new voice, Michael's. “And so am I.”

Hurley wondered what Walt would do, whether he would start talking to Michael again, but Walt just turned towards Hurley and said “You go first.”

Hurley stepped up, took his swing at the ball….

“And he misses!” Charlie yelled.

“Dude, the sun’s in my eyes,” Hurley groaned. Sawyer glanced up to where the sun had just disappeared behind a cloud, raised his eyebrows, but didn’t say anything.

“Your turn.” Hurley handed the club to Walt, who frowned, concentrating hard as he took his swing, everyone watching with bated breath as the ball landed in the hole.

“Bad luck, mate,” Charlie slapped Hurley on the back, but Hurley didn’t really mind that he’d lost. Watching as Michael pushed his way through the crowd to hug and congratulate Walt was a better victory for him than winning the shot could ever have been. His reason for creating the golf course had always been to keep up morale, to bring all the survivors together, and as he watched Michael and Walt, Hurley realised he’d succeeded in his goal.
