Not sure I've ever experienced it since I grew up in a fairly small place, though I have been recently recommended a romance novel set in Newcastle (Australia), which is probably the closest I'm going to get. It's the nearest city and where I went to school. I have experienced the opposite, though, where local locations have been used in film/TV to stand-in for something else, which is always quite fun to watch.
