Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: We all probably have multiple WiPs, but which of yours has been hanging around longest, waiting to be finished?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

No, but I'd like to tell you that you urgently need a proofreader. Are you aware that you just made me answer the same question about my desired salary three different ways? Once was plenty enough! Also, why are you asking what currency I want it in, and since you are asking, why is one time US dollar at the top of the drop down and the other two times it's alphabetical under "United States"? Did you even look at this before posting, and once again afterwards?

(These people really urgently need help with this, but unless this is a Secret Test I guess telling them wouldn't help me much.)

Alternative answer to the question: "Yes, I'd like to tell you that I really need money, please give me some, with or without hiring me first."

Time for a dream roundup!

Dreams from April, May and June. )

I haven't really been remembering my dreams lately; I didn't note any dreams down at all for a period of over a month from early May. I wonder what makes my recollection fluctuate. Maybe I remember my dreams less if I'm sleeping at a comfortable temperature?

Darren Jones, you are an utter fool

Last night on BBC Question Time there was an exchange between Labour Cabinet minister Darren Jones and Reform's former chairman Zia Yusuf about migrants crossing the Channel in small boats. Jones started an answer with the words "the majority of the people in these boats are children, babies and women". Yusuf then claimed that "more than 90% of them are adult men".

As it happens, both were wrong. The UK government's own figures (section 1.1 there) show that "since January 2018, 71% of people detected arriving irregularly have been adult males aged 18 and over." Not all arrivals designated irregular are via small boats, but a large majority are; 86% is the figure given in the above-linked document.

But it's just such idiotically stupid politics by a government MP to insist on something that is so trivial to prove is wrong. Jones now looks as though he was either outright lying to the Question Time audience, which is unacceptable, or he wasn't in command of the facts on a subject that was near-certain to come up, which is incompetent.

And no, "Reform are full of racists" isn't remotely a good enough defence to this. It may very well be true, as Yusuf himself has quite possibly found in his own time in the party, but it still doesn't excuse a Cabinet minister baldly stating something that is utterly inaccurate, and that he should have known was utterly inaccurate.

It's a fundamental principle of politics, at least for me, that if you can't bring yourself to call out people on your own side of the fence, your comments cease to be debate and just become cheerleading. Jones should have done better.

...If we come into proof of extraterrestrial life, everything we thought we knew is called into question. )

As stated previously, V/H/S has quickly become a favorite horror movie franchise. I'm also curious about some other horror franchises that I haven't seen yet and have been interested in for some time, one of them being Paranormal Activity, which oddly enough can actually fit into the V/H/S universe.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: Gen. Teyla Emmagan & Sam Carter, Evan Lorne
Rating: Teen
Length: 8824
Content Notes: canon-typical violence, minor character death
Creator Links: Rachel500 on AO3, ArwenLune on AO3, ArwenLune on Audiofic Archive
Themes: Female relationships, Action/adventure, Friendship, Women being awesome

Summary: When a diplomatic mission is interrupted by the Wraith, Sam and Teyla wrestle their personal demons to work together and find a way back to Atlantis.

Reccer's Notes:
This is set soon after Sam Carter comes to Atlantis to replace Elizabeth, and both she and Teyla initially grapple with her new role. Teyla, unlike John and Rodney, had no prior knowledge of Sam Carter and can't help missing Elizabeth and not fully trusting Carter. Then a mission goes badly wrong and they're thrown together, and have to find a way through their feelings as they deal with the dangerous situation. It's a gripping read with interesting character explorations and a satisfying ending. There's also a podfic version, excellently read by ArwenLune.

Facts: (Unique Town/City Names)

Wyoming :

Story - Named after an original rancher named, Charles B. Story, who established the post office there in the 1860s. (I wonder about the stories of the land.)

Thermopolis - Greek for "hot city", is home to numerous natural hot springs. The town is named for the hot springs located there. (And after 100 days of cover the united states... Tomorrow I will either stop the facts or just move on to more generalized facts.)

So yeah, I've finished another book! Yay!

Did it pass?

Yeah, I think it did. But let's talk about it in a bit more detail.

So this book is a different style of mystery than any of the previous books in this series. For once, Jack's issues are not the plot. Instead, this reminds me a bit more of something like Midsomer Murders, where we have a complex cast of characters and dynamics that weave together in its own story. Our investigating heroes are separate, friendly outsiders with no stakes in the mystery except the drive to find out the truth.

Well, kind of. There are a few elements that keep this from being a standalone story.

Most of that comes from Alex Adrian. It's not a coincidence, I think, that Jack gets very invested in Alex's story. Alex is a grieving widower, who thinks he knows the cause of his wife's death, but hasn't been able to truly comprehend it or move past it.

And of course, Jack Fleming knows exactly what it's like to grieve a woman that he loves, without understanding what happened to her or why. He finally got those answers in the last book and now he can give those answers to someone else.

We also see a lot of development for Jack and Bobbi. Jack's still pretty avoidant and his trust issues are on full display. But they talk and they move forward, and Bobbi makes her choice for the future. That's pretty great.

And I think it's significant that Jack now has three people who know the truth about what he is, who are not horrified or disgusted or judgmental. He's getting to be honest with them and has been rewarded for it. That's kind of nice.

That aside, I do think that this is the weakest book in the series, so far. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. A breezy Midsomer adventure is a welcome reprieve after the intensity of Bloodcircle and before, well...

If my memory's correct, this reprieve will not last that long. Hah.

So yeah, I enjoyed it very much, and it's time to make a decision for next week.
