haldoor and
kpalafox who requested Sawyer taking care of Jack at
lostsquee Summer Luau. It's Sawyer who takes care of Jack after he collapses at Boone's funeral in The Greater Good.
“Sawyer?” Jack opened his eyes, looked at him. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m makin’ sure you get some rest, is what I’m doin’ here. Freckles told me she just had to knock you out so you didn’t go runnin’ after Locke.”
“Locke?” Jack croaked feebly. “Has anyone seen him?”
Sawyer shook his head. “Sorry.” There was no need to mention the fact that the last he’d heard, Legs was running after him with one of the guns - it wouldn’t do the Doc any good to hear that, and it would probably have him deciding to run off after them, even though Freckles and Mohammed appeared to have that one covered.
But Jack decided to try and struggle to his feet anyway. “I have to go talk to him.”
“No you don’t,” Sawyer replied, holding out a hand to stop him. “You need to get back to sleep, and I’m gonna sit here and make sure you get it.”
“I don’t need a babysitter, Sawyer,” Jack glared at him. “Why are you doing this?”
“Because sitting here with you beats the hell out of reading to the rugrat?” Sawyer joked. At Jack’s quizzical look, he explained “Charlie had me reading some car manual to him earlier. Reckoned my voice was the only thing that was gonna get him back to sleep. But after a couple of pages of that, I was nearly asleep myself.” As Jack laughed, he continued “And now I’m gonna see if it works on you.”
“Good luck with that one,” Jack laughed again and once more tried to get up, but with less enthusiasm than before, and eventually lay back down and closed his eyes.
“Good call,” Sawyer said as he watched him. “You have to rest, Doc, because the whole camp needs you.” But he waited until Jack had fallen asleep before whispering the words he hadn’t dared to say, to even admit to himself, remembering everything that had happened with everyone else he’d ever let himself love before. “Because I need you, you jackass.”
Jack didn’t move, or blink; Sawyer didn’t think that he’d heard it. But he wondered whether he’d ever feel able to say it when Jack was actually listening, whether he’d be able to move on from his past well enough to be able to truly let down his guard in a relationship.
He did know one thing, however. Jack was the first person where he’d ever even thought there might be a chance of that.
Sayid stuck his head around the entrance of the tent, holding out the key to the gun case, which Shannon had taken earlier that day. “It is okay, we got it back.”
“He hasn’t missed it,” Sawyer explained, placing it beside Jack’s neck. “We’ll let him think it just fell off.”
Sayid nodded. “I agree. There is no need to worry Jack about what just happened.”
As he walked away, Sawyer suspected there was a story there, but he knew that it wasn’t the right time to ask. It just mattered that he stayed there and took care of Jack, for all their sakes. Then maybe, one day he’d be able to say it while Jack was awake.
