Summary: Sometimes Alison would imagine the invisible cord tying her to Lennon, and would imagine taking an axe to cleave right through it, separating the twins from each other’s lives once and for all. For 100fandoms prompt: cleave.
It was something they’d probably both screamed at each other more times than either of them would have ever cared to remember: “I wish you weren’t my sister.” Lennon used to say it a lot when they were kids, when she had plans with either Margot and Riley, or whichever sucker was the date of the week, and Bruce would try and persuade her to let Alison tag along. But Alison wished Lennon wasn’t her sister either, thought about the life she could have had if she’d been the only child. Without the loud, selfish, obnoxious, manipulative Lennon in her life, maybe the friends who flocked to her so easily might have noticed Alison; maybe Alison wouldn’t have had to go through so many years believing her father favoured Lennon. Sometimes she saw Lennon as the sun and herself as the moon, and wondered if maybe, without the sun that was Lennon blinding his eyes, Dylan would notice the moon, Alison.
Sometimes Alison would imagine the invisible cord tying her to Lennon, and would imagine taking an axe to cleave right through it, separating the twins from each other’s lives once and for all. But when she’d got into Lennon’s car, after having thrown the necklace back at Lennon, she’d had no real plan at first. If Margot, Johnny, Riley and Dylan hadn’t got in the car when they did, Alison sometimes wonders what would have happened; would Lennon have turned round and walked back for the car after Bruce had turfed her out of his? Would Alison have just taken the car and driven herself home, not caring how Lennon would have got home, or would she have gone to find Bruce eventually for a ride? She’ll never know; but in the spur of the moment she had snapped, decided to go with it and be Lennon for the evening, get a taste of what her life could have been like if these guys had ever taken any notice of her.
Alison had felt on edge for the entire car ride, always conscious that she could say or do something that would be immediately obvious to one or more of the others that it wasn’t Lennon talking, some in joke she didn’t understand, some memory of something Alison hadn’t been involved in. But as they all chatted and laughed about shit, it happened that it was all stuff that Alison could bluff her way through. And if someone did spot her, what was the worst that would happen? Getting yelled at by Lennon for taking her place? Alison got yelled at by Lennon several times a week, and besides, Lennon wasn’t above pretending to be Alison; she’d tried that one at school to get herself out of trouble enough times. Getting laughed at by Lennon’s friends for daring to pass herself off as Lennon? Dylan and Johnny weren’t like that, and Margot and Riley had laughed at her enough times, it was nothing new.
If Lennon hadn’t walked out into the road when she did, Alison didn’t know what exactly would have happened. Maybe she’d have even got away with it and Lennon wouldn’t have ever found out. But as she’d been joining in the conversation, Alison had been thinking how this could have been her life if Lennon wasn’t there. Alison couldn’t say afterwards what had been her intention as she’d stamped on the accelerator, whether she’d had any conscious thought of removing Lennon from her life or had merely meant to scare her. But she had wanted Lennon out of her life in that moment when she’d found out about her and Dylan, and mere hours later Lennon was now gone, that invisible cord severed just as Alison had always imagined, and she found herself thinking that maybe she should have been more careful what she wished for.
