'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud

He’s always been against the idea of other people coming, claimed that they brought danger with them. Destruction and corruption, it always ends the same, that was how he put it.

But Jacob sees it differently, believes that new people can only be a good thing.

He can’t even remember now how their rivalry began, it’s been so long now. But as his nemesis swears to find a loophole, Jacob vows that by bringing other people, they can protect him, be his shelter from the storm.

He does not yet know that that decision will eventually prove his downfall.

And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her, on that I give my word

He knows what he told them before. Whatever happened, happened.

But Daniel has since realised that he can’t let this be true. If there’s any way he can make sure Charlotte leaves the island, he knows he’s got to do it. Even though he already knows that she’ll think he’s a crazy man, she’ll be scared, she won’t believe him and will come back anyway.

In a way, it had to happen because it had already happened. But maybe he can make it happen differently. Even if it means they will never have met, Daniel must try to save Charlotte.

Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved.

She knows that she must not think of him in this way.

Sun remembers what happened the last time she allowed herself to have thoughts of a man who was not her husband. The pain of Jae Lee’s death, and her suspicions of Jin’s role, are still fresh in her mind.

Besides, the island is her punishment. She does not deserve to be happy, to take the chance of shelter and protection she knows Michael wants to offer her.

Jin’s protectiveness is stifling. Michael offers her the chance of freedom. Yet she does not take it, because she is protecting Michael.

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail,
Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail,

He doesn’t need rest, damn it. He needs to get out there, find that son of a bitch Locke and get some answers from him.

Kate thinks she’s doing what’s best for him, for all of them. But Jack doesn’t want that. He owes it to Boone. He’d promised he’d try and fix him, and he’d failed him, all because of Locke’s lie.

He fights against the effects of the drug she’s put in his drink, determined to go after Locke. But as sleep threatens to overtake him, he watches Kate’s face and realises he can’t fight it any more.

Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair.

Charlie had been starting to think that he was never going to see her again.

From the moment he’d first seen her, right after they’d crashed, he’d felt this strong protective instinct towards her. They all said it wasn’t his fault, when Ethan took her, but Charlie had always felt as though he’d failed Claire by somehow allowing her to be kidnapped.

But he’d never given up hope that she would return.

The day Claire returned to him, he vowed he’d do whatever it took to protect her. When Desmond told him later what to do, he did not hesitate.

Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost
I took too much for granted, got my signals crossed.

Juliet had known, even as he kissed her, what was really going through his mind.

Ben had told her how Jack had reacted when he saw them on the monitor. Juliet knew that as Jack kissed her, Kate’s face had replaced her own in his eyes.

She’d tried to tell herself it could be different with James. And after three years, she was just starting to relax, to believe that that might be true.

But as Juliet watched the way he looked at Kate, she realised she could no longer hide from the truth in the shelter of his arms.

Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts

They all keep trying to guess his motives, ever since crashing here. They ask if he’s got a death wish, if he’s trying to be a hero.

But Sawyer feels more comfortable somehow with not being understood. When Freckles tells him that everyone loves him now, a part of him panics. He’s not used to caring about, or being cared about by, anyone. It always ends badly when he does, he learned long ago.

He’s more at ease at first when everyone turns on him after he gets hold of the guns. But when Kate guesses, he feels uncomfortable again.

I've heard newborn babies wailin' like a mournin' dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love.

They are his future now, Penny and the baby. As Desmond watches his son come into the world, he feels once more that there is hope. He determines that he will never again think of all those years he and Penny were apart, his time on the island, and especially the man who will never set eyes on his grandchild, the man who was responsible for his and Penny’s separation: Charles Widmore.

The reason he’d left Penny all those years ago was because he didn’t think he could provide for her. But he understands now that love is what really matters.

In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation an' they gave me a lethal dose.

They appear to believe him when he says the Others are worse off than them.

Why shouldn’t they? Michael’s been their friend ever since they all crashed here. They’ve no reason not to trust him.

He knows what they’ll all think of him when he’s gone, when he’s delivered the people on the list to the Others. He’s still not sure how he’s going to do that yet. But he knows he’ll do what he has to, because getting Walt back is all that matters.

But he’ll try not to think of it now, hold on to these last moments.

Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine.

They always told him that these are the dangerous people. Everyone’s always called them the Hostiles.

Yet Ben feels more at home here, on the other side of the fence, with the people he’s been brought up to fear, than he does with the people on his own side of the island.

The man called Widmore tells Ben he’ll be back with his father soon. But Ben remembers the day, four years earlier, when he’d made his way across the island to see his mother before him.

And if he can just stay here, he may be with Emily again.
